A community in the Clouds, dedicated to living in Peace & Harmony with each other and nature.
Overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya and straddling the continental divide at 1,440 meters elevation (4,662 ft), Monteverde is an approximately three-hour drive from San Jose, the capital and largest city in Costa Rica. Monteverde is world-renowned for its natural diversity. The area is home to more than 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, tens of thousands of insect species and 2,500 species of plants, including more than 500 species of orchids. The Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the top destinations in the country.
Monteverde is not as hot as the beaches and lowlands. Temperatures here range from 50 F with strong wind and mist to 80 F and sunny. The rainy season lasts from May to November. December to February is transitional season, with winds and mist. Dry season is February to May.
Casual clothing is king. Think hiking on dusty roads and dense forest trails. Layers are best. There are microclimates every 50 meters up or down in Monteverde. Weather can turn from hot and sunny to cool and misty in minutes. You may change layers often in a short distance. You’ll want a waterproof layer (light raincoat or windbreaker). You will also want a fleece or sweatshirt. Shorts are nice on warm sunny days but when hiking through the forest you may prefer light-weight pants.
Essentials
Suntan lotion (sunlight is intense, even at cool temps)
Good hiking shoes, but also lightweight sandals or Crocs for around the facility.
Reusable water bottle (All tap water in Costa Rica is potable and safe to drink. We do not provide bottled water as it only creates more waste.)
We don't have many mosquitoes at this elevation, but we do have various no-see-ums, chiggers, ants, and other biting things. Many people never need repellent, but you may need it while traveling to get here. (No DEET-based products).
Inessentials
Swimwear if you plan to use the pool or visit the beach before or after the retreat
Binoculars to see wildlife
Flashlight or headlamp
Backpack or shoulder bag
Preferred foods or meds. We will provide meals and snacks, but if you have specific needs, you may need to bring them as there are few stores
